These pictures were taken during a road trip that I made in the summer of 1974, driving alone along Route 1 from Boston, Mass., to Portland, Maine. This road was a well-traveled old vacation route that nostalgically evoked my childhood years growing up in the region.
During the summer of 1977 my husband and I lived in a mobile home located on a farm in Remsen, New York. We rented the furnished mobile home from a couple who owned the farm, which had a few exotic animals like peacocks and wildcats on the premises. I spent most of my time inside the mobile home, experimenting with photography by taking pictures of the interior features. Those features, especially formica and plastic surfaces, struck me as a creative solution to affordable luxury.
